6 puppies in a car

David Paris

I use words, the internet, and digital tools, platforms and systems to try to make the world a bit nicer.

I've worked across every element of public campaigns and advocacy, from campaign strategy, planning and execution to detailed communications and privacy policy development.
I've project-managed major web and digital systems upgrades, platform migrations and GDPR compliance for organisations operating across Europe, North America and Australia.
I've coordinated teams of more than a hundred people and facilitated training workshops for small teams and individuals on productivity, privacy and security, and how to make the most of digital tools.
I've overseen the development of cutting edge interactive web content, and delivered effective action and donation emails for recipient lists of hundreds of thousands of people. I've ghostwritten correspondence for CEOs and parliamentary representatives, book chapters and landmark speeches, and had agenda-setting opinion pieces syndicated across major publications.

It looks like a lot, now that I've taken a moment to write it all out. And it is! I've developed an incredibly broad range of skills working in environments that do not accommodate anything substandard. I can work from anywhere, I am happy to come to you as often as needed. I am regularly based in my home office in Fremantle, Western Australia, that I share with two cats and a coffee machine.

What I Can Do For You

Because I enjoy many aspects of campaigns and advocacy work, I am just as happy and effective running and optimising a small donor and action email campaign day-to-day as I am directing a larger communications team to deliver the right messages at the right times on the right channels. I can help you assess your systems and personnel needs, expand a new team, operate inside an existing team or provide skills and capacity you don't presently have in-house. I take on quick jobs that take a few hours and major projects that may require months. Nothing is too big or too small. If I haven't already committed my time, I can offer you:

  • Campaign messaging and media strategy, management, execution and analysis
  • Advocacy tool needs analysis, migration, implementation and training (New/Mode, NationBuilder, Action Kit, Engaging Networks, Action Network, CiviCRM…)
  • Privacy policy assessment, updates and best practice implementation
  • Communications, broadcasting, internet and digital policy development
  • Website needs analysis, project management, developer briefing
  • Social media strategy, execution and analysis
  • Fundraising and action email strategy, execution and analysis
  • Supporter/contact data security, management and migration
  • GDPR compliance management
  • Personal/individual privacy training
  • Office administration and productivity assessment and systems training
  • Speech writing, opinion pieces, web content, other promotional material copy

What I've Done Lately

I try to collaborate with organisations whose values I share. In the past few years, I've worked with Digital Rights Watch, SSTUWA, OpenMedia, GetUp!, the Australia Institute, former Senator Scott Ludlam and the Australian Greens.

A report on the erosion of press freedom in Australia

The State of Press Freedom in Australia

Working within a partnership between GetUp! and Digital Rights Watch, I was the lead author on this report into press freedom in Australia. More than 70 pieces of legislation have been passed in Australia in the name of national security, that restrict press freedoms and target whistleblowers.

The Play is Learning Campaign

Play is Learning

The State School Teachers Union of Western Australia needed to quickly stand up a minimal-cost campaign to advocate for the rights of children to learn through play, to allow teachers to deliver what is best for the children instead of their test scores. This entailed a rapid repurposing of a NationBuilder instance last used in a campaign a few years before.

OpenMedia privacy policy

Europe, GDPR Compliance and Public Advocacy

Ensuring GDPR compliance for an organisation based outside the EU, that strongly campaigns in the digital space and seeks to grow supporter numbers around the globe while upholding the values they advocate for, particularly privacy, in the months leading up to the deadline for compliance with the European Union General Data Protection Regulation was complicated and challenging.
